Is there a column that showing the capital gain alone (without dividends) of an asset? I see that I can see the Income, the Returns (that includes the CG and the dividends), but I can’t get the capital gain without doing the math by myself.
You can choose what’s included in the returns: Calculating returns | Capitally
Thanks Rafal! With that I can get the right number However, I struggle having on the same visualization the capital gain, the dividend income and the total return (as the sum of those two). Would it make sense to have a dedicated column for the realised capital gain?
Context: in Britain, capital gain dividends and interest are taxed in very different ways. While I can export them individually, it would be nice to track them and their total over the fiscal year
Hmm, you can have the Returns, Realized Return and Income columns.
With return options you can select if you want income to be included in both Returns, however it’s currently not possible to have a total that combines these.
If it’s a tax matter, a better option would be to handle this in the Tax Preset. There’s a rudimentary one for GB, but I’d be more than happy to implement a proper one, that takes into account all the “quirks”. So then, you would have the returns properly split into groups and taxed in the Taxes Due report.
There is a tax and a planning matter.
The tax preset for the UK is very complex. Rates and tax-free allowances depend on your total income, which includes flows that aren’t (i.e. the interests on savings) or won’t (the salary income) be tracked in Capitally. To pile up more complexity, the purchase value for assets, to determine the capital gain, depends on your latest transactions. In general, exporting the individual components is doable, and this is good enough for now
Then there is the planning matter. Based on how much capital gain and dividends I’ve accumulated so far, I can decide my next actions with the goal of maximising the utilisation of the tax-free allowances. Today, this is something I can’t visualise within the same dashboard and it would be extremely useful
I was considering adding variables to tax presets, so that you can provide your external flows or income to the preset to make it more accurate.
Is it LIFO, average price, or simply the latest price?
Got it, though wouldn’t Realized Returns
(only sales) + Income
(only dividends) cut it right now? There wouldn’t be a Total of those, but as I understand, you actually need them separate.
I’ll add a Returns from Sales
to the backlog, but I guess the above could be enough for now? Especially as you can create a Bookmark with Income excluded from total returns to check your allowances, and keep the Income included in your regular Portfolio
Wonderful, thanks!
AFAIK you have to apply, in order:
- The price of the shares (same asset) acquired on the same day as the sale
- The price of the shares acquired in the 30 days before the sale
- The average price of the remaining share pool
I’m still figuring out the details, I’ve never had to deal with cases 1 and 2 before this fiscal year.
Unrelated, but since we’re here, you may want to know that the fiscal year in the UK begins the 6th of April, while in the tax preset I see that you can only set the month. We like to keep things simple in Britain
OMG, I’ll make sure to use GB as a template for the next round of enhancements to tax presets then. I remember thinking that no country would ever need to start on a different day than 1st
