How to best track P2P Loans

Hi there,
Are there any tips to track P2P loans?
In the help documentation just found that they can be tracked as dividends or interest but would apreciate more guidance on this.

Thanks

Let me walk you through exactly how to track P2P loans when you’re the lender using the buy/sell transaction method.

Step 1: Create a Custom Asset

  • Choose type “Other” (this works best for P2P loans)

Step 2: Record the Initial Loan (Buy Transaction)

  • Add Buy Transaction
  • Date: When you sent the money
  • Quantity: The full amount you loaned
  • Price: 1

Step 3: Record Interest Payments

  • Add Interest Transaction
  • Enter:
    • Date: When you received the interest payment
    • Amount: The interest amount received

Step 4: Record Principal Repayments

  • Add Sell Transaction
  • Enter:
    • Date: When you received the repayment
    • Quantity: The amount of principal being repaid
    • Price: 1

Tips for Better Tracking

  • Use the Notes field to keep track of payment schedules
  • If you have payments in a CSV anywhere, create yourself an import preset to automate this
  • If the loan defaults, you can record a “Sell” with a lower/0 price to show the loss
  • For ongoing P2P loans through platforms, you might create one asset per platform rather than per loan

Does this help with setting up your P2P loan tracking? Let me know if you need any clarification on any of these steps!

In the future I’d want to have loans, including p2p to be natively supported with their own types and transactions that combine the above.

Hi Rafal, It definitely does, thank you for the very detailed description!

Hi Rafal, Additional question, using the method you advised, how to reflect cash that is not invested in loan, let's say out of a total of 100, 80 is invested in loans and 20 is available to invest. This is key to measure returns % and to flag potential cash drags. Thanks

Not sure if I understand fully, but if it's money not loaned but "awaiting", I'd have an account with all the loans, and the cash not invested as simply cash (eg EUR) on that same account

Let's say I deposit 100 EUR into this P2P platform and only 80 EUR is loaned for projects/borrowers, the remaining 20 EUR is available to be loaned. You mentioned to use Buy Transaction for the actual loans, so in this case I would only see 80 EUR in this account, where in fact I have 100 EUR, only 80 EUR are actually invested (loaned). Not sure if I was clearer?

Got it, so as I wrote - you probably already have an account for this platform - let's call it P2P. Then you have the asset which you Buy for the loans. So now if your currency is EUR, you add a Account Balance transaction for EUR in the P2P account for the amount of 20 and update the balance this way whenever it changes. You can do the same with all the other platforms and brokers that hold uninvested cache.
