Order of entering transactions manually

When entering manually a holding I have had for several years, both buying and partially selling, it appears like you really have to enter everything in precise eorder, and perhaps only confirm dividends in order also? Is that correct? Example - I entered two buy transactions of the same mutual fund, then a sale transaction many years later (of only some shares) before I confirmed the accumulated reinvested dividends which Capitally properly found. My portfolio was then showing, however, a negative share balance because it wasn’t accounting for the fact that I the reinvested dividends had given me many more shares. And even after then proceeding to confirm the reinvested dividends, it continued to show a negative balance, which is clearly not the case in my real-life holdings.

Order of entering is only relevant if two transactions have exactly the same date and time.

Confirming dividends only stores them in their current state - so as long as you don’t confirm them, they will automatically update each time you change your transaction history.

Can you check that the generated dividend transaction where actually reinvested (they will have Received & reinvested quantity)? Also, check what’s happening with the Balance column in the Transactions view - is it growing with the dividends as you would expect?

As I recall how I did it, I entered two separate buys. Just by way of example, let’s say that gave me 200 shares in the fund. Then I entered a sale that I did many years later of around 500 shares. So as far as Capitally could tell, I now had a negative share balance. But once I then subsequently confirmed all the dividend reinvestments that occurred in between the purchases and the sale (which in reality gave me well over 500 shares), it was still showing a negative share balance. I fixed it by deleting and redoing it in order and it worked. So I was wondering if that was something I needed to be careful about. But I’m also first learning Capitally, and although my recollection is that I did it all correctly, I can’t recall 100% if I entered the dividends properly.

So if you had a negative balance before confirming the dividends, then confirming them won’t change anything as it just stops them from updating automatically.

It sounds like you didn’t have dividend reinvesting configured at the time as by default you get dividends in cash only. You can learn more about it here: How to Track Dividends in Capitally - Complete Guide | Capitally
